The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but immediately explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. A perk of the job was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
