EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
