Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
